Disaster at the hillside edge

Description

The date of this photo is 6.5.2014.

This is one of many possible outcomes of glaze ice. These poor beeches were surely too old or too tall to support all the new ice and as a consequence, they had collapsed under their weight, even if they already got their "useless" branches off themselves. and you can just see it, once more trees fall down, a giant-ass gash is created at their root-base.
And I just needed this gash to analyze the soil that supports this beech forest on the hillside. Every cloud has a silver lining, eh? ;)

That is something I see often in our forests here after a windy storm or winters :)
